Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum number of clients this access point can support?
The RUCKUS R650 supports up to 512 concurrent client connections per access point. This high client capacity makes it ideal for dense environments like universities, large offices, retail stores, and hospitality venues where hundreds of users simultaneously connect to Wi-Fi. The 4x4:4 5GHz and 2x2:2 2.4GHz MU-MIMO configuration enables simultaneous multi-user performance rather than sequential access, maintaining consistent throughput even with maximum client load.
What are the peak data rates and how do they compare to Wi-Fi 5?
The R650 delivers peak PHY rates of 2400 Mbps on 5GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4GHz, for a combined maximum of 2974 Mbps. This represents approximately 1.7x higher throughput compared to Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) access points, which typically max out around 1.7 Gbps. The improvement comes from Wi-Fi 6's OFDMA technology, which divides channels into smaller sub-channels for more efficient spectrum utilization and reduced latency.
Can this access point be powered using standard PoE infrastructure?
Yes, the R650 supports both IEEE 802.3af PoE (12.25W) and 802.3at PoE+ (21.59W) power delivery. This means it can be powered from any standard enterprise PoE+ switch without requiring separate power supplies. PoE+ support at 21.59W enables full functionality including all radios, dual Ethernet ports, USB, and onboard IoT features (BLE and Zigbee). This eliminates installation complexity and reduces cabling costs in large-scale deployments.
What management options are available for controlling multiple access points?
The R650 supports three flexible management modes: cloud-based management through RUCKUS Cloudpath for centralized control across multiple sites, on-premises physical or virtual appliances for organizations preferring local control, and standalone (controllerless) mode for individual AP management without a central controller. All modes support Web GUI, CLI, and SNMP interfaces. This flexibility enables organizations to choose the management approach that best fits their IT infrastructure and operational preferences.
How does BeamFlex+ antenna technology improve network performance?
BeamFlex+ is RUCKUS proprietary adaptive antenna technology that generates 128 unique antenna patterns per band, dynamically selecting optimal patterns based on real-time RF conditions and client locations. This approach dramatically improves coverage consistency, reduces dead zones, and optimizes throughput compared to traditional omnidirectional antennas. Combined with ChannelFly dynamic channel selection and SmartRoam mobility optimization, BeamFlex+ enables fewer access points to serve larger areas while maintaining consistent performance quality.
What IoT capabilities does the R650 include?
The R650 includes onboard Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Zigbee support for direct integration with IoT devices and smart building systems. This eliminates the need for separate IoT gateways or controllers, reducing infrastructure costs and simplifying deployment. BLE enables proximity-based services and location tracking, while Zigbee supports low-power IoT devices including smart lighting, environmental controls, and security sensors.
Is the R650 suitable for outdoor or harsh environment deployments?
The R650 is designed as an indoor access point with operating temperature range of 0-50°C (32-122°F) and humidity tolerance up to 95% non-condensing. While these specifications support typical indoor environments including air-conditioned offices and heated retail spaces, the R650 is not rated for outdoor, extreme temperature, or harsh industrial environments. For outdoor deployments, RUCKUS offers dedicated outdoor access point models with extended temperature ranges and weatherproof enclosures.
