DDR4 ECC modules are sold by JEDEC speed (MT/s) and PC4 bandwidth name. A module runs at the slowest speed the CPU, the board and the population allow.

Faster modules are backward compatible within DDR4 - a 3200 module runs at 2666 on a 2666 platform.
The rank code on a DDR4 module describes how the DRAM chips are organised. The number before R is the rank count (independent 64-bit groups the controller addresses in turn); x4 or x8 is the width of each chip. 1Rx4 and 2Rx4 are the common RDIMM layouts; 2Rx8 uses more, narrower chips and is typical for 8GB-16GB parts; 4Rx4 and 8Rx4 appear on high-capacity LRDIMMs.
Rank matters for two reasons: platforms cap the total ranks per channel (often 8), and mixing ranks in a channel forces the slowest configuration. For a full population, buy modules with the same rank, speed and manufacturer - or send us the server model and we assemble a matched set.
