DDR4 speeds and the platforms that use them

DDR4 ECC modules are sold by JEDEC speed (MT/s) and PC4 bandwidth name. A module runs at the slowest speed the CPU, the board and the population allow.

Reading the rank: 1Rx4, 2Rx4, 2Rx8, 4Rx4

The rank code on a DDR4 module describes how the DRAM chips are organised. The number before R is the rank count (independent 64-bit groups the controller addresses in turn); x4 or x8 is the width of each chip. 1Rx4 and 2Rx4 are the common RDIMM layouts; 2Rx8 uses more, narrower chips and is typical for 8GB-16GB parts; 4Rx4 and 8Rx4 appear on high-capacity LRDIMMs.

Rank matters for two reasons: platforms cap the total ranks per channel (often 8), and mixing ranks in a channel forces the slowest configuration. For a full population, buy modules with the same rank, speed and manufacturer - or send us the server model and we assemble a matched set.

New vs Recertified vs Refurbished

Every part is sold by exact manufacturer part number and ships warranty-backed. Here's what each condition means so you can weigh price against your workload.

New: Factory-sealed and unused, with the full manufacturer warranty. The safest choice for a fresh build or a warranty-sensitive deployment.
Recertified: OEM-recertified and restored to original specification, typically with low power-on hours. Health-tested and backed by our own replacement warranty — the same usable capacity for a lower price.
Refurbished: Professionally tested working pulls, wiped and inspected. A cost-effective option for labs, cold storage and non-critical tiers, warranty-backed.
