Every enterprise SSD wears out eventually - flash memory can only be written so many times. Manufacturers express that limit with an endurance rating, and the one you will see most is DWPD. Understanding it stops you from both over-paying for endurance you will never use and from buying a drive that wears out early.
What DWPD means
DWPD = Drive Writes Per Day. A 1.92TB SSD rated at 1 DWPD can have its entire 1.92TB capacity written every single day for the length of its warranty - typically five years - and still meet its endurance specification. A 3 DWPD drive of the same size can absorb three full-capacity writes per day.
DWPD vs TBW
TBW (Terabytes Written) is the same endurance expressed as a lifetime total instead of a daily rate. The two are linked: TBW = DWPD x capacity x warranty days. A drive may list one or both. DWPD is easier for sizing against a daily workload; TBW is easier when you know total expected writes.
The endurance classes
- Read-intensive (~1 DWPD): boot volumes, web servers, content delivery, analytics that mostly read. The cheapest and highest-capacity per dollar.
- Mixed-use (~3 DWPD): general virtualization, most databases, mainstream server storage. The sensible default when you are unsure.
- Write-intensive (10+ DWPD): heavy logging, write-back caching, OLTP with constant updates. Most expensive, lowest capacity per dollar, but built to take punishment.
How to size it
Estimate your average daily writes, divide by the drive's capacity, and choose a class with comfortable headroom above that number. If you write ~500GB/day to a 2TB drive, that is 0.25 DWPD - a read-intensive drive is plenty. If you are slamming the same drive with 6TB/day, you need a write-intensive class.
Over-spec'ing endurance burns budget on flash you will never wear out. Under-spec'ing risks the drive degrading or going read-only before its time. Right-sizing DWPD is one of the easiest ways to control SSD cost.
Bottom line
DWPD is just "how many full writes per day for the warranty." Estimate your daily writes, divide by capacity, and match to read-intensive, mixed-use or write-intensive. It is a five-minute calculation that can save real money.
