The network interface card decides how fast your server talks to the rest of the network and what cabling it uses. Pick the wrong speed or the wrong port type and the card either will not link to your switch or bottlenecks everything behind it. Here is how to choose.
Speeds: 1, 10, 25 and beyond
1GbE is fine for management and light workloads but is now the floor. 10GbE is the mainstream server standard for storage traffic, virtualization and busy application servers. 25GbE has become the modern data-center uplink, with 40, 50 and 100GbE reserved for spines, storage fabrics and the most demanding nodes. Match the card to what your switch ports and workload actually need - a 25GbE card is wasted plugged into a 1G switch.
SFP+ vs RJ45
Two physical port styles dominate. RJ45 uses familiar twisted-pair copper (10GBASE-T) and is convenient for short in-rack runs, but draws more power and adds latency at 10G. SFP+ and SFP28 are cages that take a pluggable module: a fiber transceiver for distance, or a DAC (direct-attach copper) cable for cheap, low-power links inside a rack. Data centers lean on SFP+ and DAC for efficiency; RJ45 wins on convenience in mixed copper environments.
Form factor: PCIe vs OCP
NICs come as standard PCIe add-in cards, or as vendor slot modules - OCP mezzanine, Dell rNDC, HPE FlexLOM and similar - that drop into a dedicated network slot without consuming a PCIe slot. The module type is server-specific, so confirm which slot your chassis provides before buying.
Match the whole path
A link only comes up when the card, the cable or transceiver, and the switch port all agree. Confirm the speed is supported end to end, and that your transceivers are accepted - many switches and cards are coded to specific optics, so a mismatched transceiver may simply refuse to link.

Pick the speed your switch and workload justify (10GbE for most, 25GbE for modern data centers), choose RJ45 for copper convenience or SFP+/DAC for efficiency, confirm the card fits your PCIe or OCP slot, and make sure the transceivers are compatible end to end.
