Before interface or capacity, a drive has to physically fit and connect. Server drives come in several form factors, and ordering the wrong one means a drive that will not seat or will not link. Here is each format, what it is for, and how to make sure it fits.
3.5-inch (LFF)
Large Form Factor. The biggest physical size, and the home of the highest-capacity nearline HDDs. You will find LFF bays in storage arrays and capacity-focused servers. If you need maximum terabytes per drive, this is the format.
2.5-inch (SFF)
Small Form Factor. The workhorse of modern rack servers - it lets you pack many more drives into a chassis. Both HDDs and SSDs come in 2.5-inch SATA and SAS. Most current servers ship with 2.5-inch bays, making SFF the default for new builds.
M.2
A small "gumstick" circuit board (common lengths: 2280, 2260, 2242) that plugs directly into a slot on the motherboard or a riser. Usually NVMe, occasionally SATA. M.2 is ideal for boot drives and compact builds where bays are scarce.
U.2 and E3.S
These are the enterprise NVMe formats. U.2 packages NVMe in a hot-swappable 2.5-inch-style chassis, so you get PCIe speed with front-serviceable drives. E3.S is the newer EDSFF standard purpose-built for dense, high-performance NVMe in modern servers. Both need a server and backplane that explicitly support them.
Always match the bay
Confirm three things before ordering: the bay size (2.5 vs 3.5), the interface the backplane supports (SATA / SAS / NVMe), and the correct tray or caddy. A 2.5-inch drive needs a 2.5-inch bay (or an adapter) and the right carrier to seat and be recognized - a bare drive with no caddy is a common, avoidable mistake.
Bottom line
3.5-inch for maximum capacity, 2.5-inch for dense general-purpose storage, M.2 for boot and compact NVMe, U.2/E3.S for serviceable high-performance NVMe. Match the bay, interface and carrier, and the drive drops right in.
